A goal of the Belle Isle Nature Center is to increase environmental awareness. An amazing variety of animals and plants live in urban Detroit. The Nature Center helps us learn to see the presence of nature all around us.
Inside the Nature Center are a collection of exhibits to open our eyes to nature in an urban setting. The popular "Under the SideWalk" allows kids to crawl through a maze and learn about with insects, earthworms and other every day wonders. A dimly lighted hallway reminds us of the unexplored world of storm sewers under our feet. "The Pollination Center" gives you a bee's eye view of the flowers and hands on experience with the movement of pollen from flower to flower.
The most popular exhibits contain living animals. The large pond as you enter is Turtle Cove with a surprising array of animals. Other exhibits feature live mud puppies, tiger salamanders, tree frogs, bull frogs, garter snakes, water snakes and honey bees. A large viewing window lets you to watch birds, squirrels and the occasional deer outside the building. Sometimes the animals hide. Keep looking, they are there!
The building includes a lounge area around a fireplace. Chairs the right size for children and adults make it a nice place to relax. The Nature Center also has the best and most available public restrooms on Belle Isle.
Outside the building is an area for nature exploration.
In early spring, daffodils will be blooming. Several bee hives are buzzing. A small pond is home to many native animals and is open for hands-on exploration. The birds present range from mourning doves and redwing blackbirds to hawks and the occasional bald eagle. The plants from the adjacent mesic (well watered) forest and grassy marsh may be closely examined.
The Belle isle Nature is the Belle Isle Special Attraction for Daffodil Day on April 17, 2024. It is well worth a stop before the Daffodil Luncheon. The Nature Center is open until 5:00pm and you may visit after the luncheon.
